Do You Know What An Autism Mom Is?

One of the questions that I get asked a lot as an Autism Mom is, “What’s an Autism Mom?” or “What is that exactly?” So, I thought it would be a good idea to attempt to explain what it means to be an Autism Mom.

An Autism Mom is a mom who has a child with Autism. She spends her days taking care of her child and helping them with their needs. An Autism Mom sometimes feels isolated and alone because she has no one to talk to. An Autism Mom is more likely to feel down than other moms because she sometimes doesn’t know where to get help for her child. An Autism Mom is more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than other moms because she has so much going on in her mind with trying to understand what’s happening with her child and how she can help him or her. An Autism Mom stays up at night worrying about what will happen when she can no longer take care of her child. Will he or she be happy? Will they find someone to love them? Who will take care of them? An Autism Mom has a hard time focusing on herself because she’s so busy taking care of everyone else in the family.

Why do I say “Autism Mom” instead of “Mom of an Autistic Child”?

An Autism mom is a mom who has a child, or multiple children, with an autism diagnosis. It’s important to note that the autism spectrum is a very wide spectrum, and each child is unique in their strengths, challenges, and needs. A lot of times people assume that just because a child is on the spectrum they are nonverbal and violent, but that is not always the case. There are now 1 in every 68 children being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), so chances are high you know a family with an ASD diagnosis.

Why do I say “Autism Mom” instead of “Mom of an Autistic Child”?

I say it because I am proud to be the mother of my two autistic girls. They are amazing people and I am proud of them and proud to be their mom. Being an autism mom doesn’t mean you spend your entire life focused on how your child behaves or their diagnosis. It means you focus on your child as a person first and then adjust anything else to fit them. You have to have a sense of humor about things, because if you don’t you won’t survive!

Autism Poems From Mom To Son

I was diagnosed with autism when I was 5 years old. My mom spent many hours trying to figure out what was wrong with me. She did everything she could to make sure I had a normal life like every other kid. She took me to special classes and never gave up on me.

I owe her so much for all of the time and effort she put into making me the person I am today. I will never be able to tell her how thankful I am for all that she has done. That’s why I wrote this poem for her.

When you were first born,

I knew something wasn’t right,

And my heart was broken into pieces,

So I picked up those pieces,

And held you close to my chest,

You looked up at me with those big brown eyes,

And it was then that I realized…
